Want to see our Solar System up close, not just read about it? Climb aboard this vintage Checker taxi for a guided tour of all the “hot” attractions: the Sun, the planets, the dwarf planets, the moons, and zillions of asteroids, meteors, comets and more.

Where does it go?  The Yellow Cab will fly you to the International Space Station for a personal video tour by one of the astronauts, then on to the Moon, where you will relive one of the most exciting moments in human history. Before you know it, you’ll be cruising over the surface of Mars, even landing to have a look around. Using the built-in gyroscope in iPad, you can see the Martian landscape exactly the way Opportunity rover did. Then zoom off to Jupiter and sail through the rings of Saturn on your way to the farthest reaches of the Solar System. And it will all look more colorful and more real than you can imagine.

What makes it so cool?  The Yellow Cab iBooks textbook combines audio, video, interactive images, 3D graphics and much more to usher in a whole new generation of digital books.

Who should take a ride?  Everyone! Students and teachers, of course, but also anyone who has ever looked up at the nighttime sky in wonder and awe. The Yellow Cab is much more than a book; it’s a totally engaging interactive experience, and it’s designed so that anyone at any age can enjoy it.

Don’t wait! The next tour is getting ready to depart … [No tipping, please.]

Who Is the Man Behind the Cab?

Yellow Cab of the Universe is the creation of Eduardo Galvani, an internationally renowned visual designer. Galvani fell in love with science at an early age. He trained his telescope on the stars and would sit for hours staring at the nighttime sky. But it was his talent for drawing that opened up a career, taking him first to New York, where he worked for leading ad agencies, and then to Tokyo, where he established his own studio.

While his business grew more successful, Galvani’s love of science and education continued to tug at him. He longed to create some kind of digital book, not a standard textbook, but something compelling that would help readers of all ages appreciate his first love – astronomy. When his daughter came home from school one day and announced that, “Science is boring,” he had all the motivation he needed.

“I made a bet with myself that I would either create a fun, entertaining and informative book about astronomy within one year or go drive a cab in New York,” he recounts with a smile. Suddenly an idea was born: What about a taxi tour of the Solar System? It was the right approach to show how interesting science can be. And it would require all of Galvani’s varied talents: graphic design, animation, photography, video, music, motion graphics and more.

Still, one important tool was missing – a way to put it all together. Then, in early 2012, Apple released iBooks Author. One look was enough to see its potential. Over the next several months, Galvani conceived, designed, developed and realized YCU, and in the process raised the bar for digital publishing. Now, he says, the Yellow Cab has only just begun its journey and promises, “There are even more exciting new ‘tours’ to come.”
